Mooncake season is well upon us, and as surely as the moon rises to greet us each night, we’re equally dedicated to sniffing out great finds as always. So here’s us wasting no time, jumping right into 20 unique mooncake options for your perusal this mid-autumn festival.

Golden Moments lifestyle image

I think I speak on behalf of most Singaporeans when I say that Golden Moments needs absolutely no introduction—it’s simply the synonym of all things durian. Leading up to the mooncake season, I’ve lost count of the number of friends who’ve asked me for my opinion on the famed durian brand, and now I’ll finally taste and tell.

Clicking into Golden Moments’ website is a very kid-in-a-candy-shop moment for durian lovers because it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of options, but let me walk you through them. If you’re absolutely sure about what you’re making a beeline for, then go right ahead for the flavoured boxes that come in the classic Signature Durian Snowskin Mooncake (U.P. S$118.60, now S$78.80), Lychee Martini (U.P. S$98.80, now S$64.80), and Classic Pandan Snowskin Mooncake (U.P. S$98.80, now S$64.80).

Those looking to sample just a bit of each, however, also have that option which comes by way of the assorted boxes that I quite frankly enjoy more, simply because of the variety you’ll get from one succinct box. We got to try the Assorted 4 Flavours Snowskin mooncake (U.P. S$118.60, now S$78.80) which included a piece of , , , as well as the .

Golden Moments mooncake & tea pairing

I’m happy to report that the does indeed live up to the hype of being one of the best out there. Praline lovers like me, however, will enjoy the modified version—the —and that subtle roasted pop against all that durian creaminess. A 10 out of 10, if anyone’s keeping score.

From now until 11 September 2021, take up to 35% off your mooncake orders, and also receive a set of vouchers worth S$250 with every box purchased. Golden Moments fulfils your durian craving on-demand with their islandwide delivery within 90 minutes, or if you prefer to handpick the velvety goodness yourself, grab them from your nearest Fairprice Finest, selected Esso Petrol Kiosks, Cheers, and Fairprice Xpress outlets.

On top of all the goodness that’s already going on, Golden Moments is also running a Spin & Sure Win campaign for every box of mooncake purchased, exclusively on their website. Participants stand a chance to win up to S$50,000 worth of attractive prizes such as an Ogawa Foot Massager, Living Care Jewel Series Water Dispenser, ErgoTune chair, Golden Moments Gold Bar, and many more.

2. Durian Law

Durian Law lifestyle image

It seems like the local durian scene is shaking up because a new kid on the block, Durian Law, is bringing their A-game, and they play by their own rules. Aside from combining two of a Singaporean’s favourite things, they’ve also thoughtfully curated a Spotify playlist that comes with every box. So the next time you’re chowing down on soft, decadent durian mooncakes, you’ve got a bangin’ playlist to make your ‘treat-yo-self’ day all the more indulgent.

Durian Law flatlay

Eight durian-packed, smashing good snowskin mooncakes are sold neatly packed, with snow-white pieces contrasting gorgeously against a gleaming gold background. And this is all encapsulated in a tin box that can be upcycled as a storage container for tea, tidbits, or anything that fits, really. Because are you truly Singaporean if your house isn’t half made up of recycled mooncake boxes?

Though quips aside, what I love the most about Durian Law’s Snowskin Mooncake (S$68, U.P. S$88) is their no-nonsense, 100% durian filling with no added sugar or preservatives that serves the good stuff straight to your palate, all while keeping things affordable.

Fyre Singapore top down shot

Fyre Singapore is no stranger to us here at the SethLui.com team, seeing how we gave their a go last year and absolutely loved every fiery bit of it. Fyre Singapore’s culinary expertise is marked by their signature smoking technique with applewood and lychee, and this festive season, they’re infusing smoky, fruity notes with their handcrafted mooncakes.

Cross section of lychee mooncake

The traditional Cherry Blossom Lychee (S$88) mooncakes are smoked in Singapore with lychee wood, infusing a heavily perfumed aroma of the sweet, sweet fruit that quite frankly leaves me both impressed in awe. As a person who has absolutely no sweet tooth in her body, I’ve never been one for mooncakes, let alone fruity ones. So it speaks volumes when one bite into Fyre’s lychee flavoured mooncake sends my eyes lighting up in pleasant surprise, and it doesn’t take long before I find myself gobbling the rest of the piece up.

The snowskin counterparts aren’t short on the fruit-centred goodness either—indulge in the Cherry Blossom Lychee Black Gold MSW (S$148.80), or if you want to go straight for the unadulterated king of fruits, the 100% Black Gold MSW (S$118) is an unfailing favourite. This line of mooncakes is made with hand-peeled fresh durian flesh, so you can be sure that every bite is a promise of pure delight only.

Mooncake & wine pairing

If you’re really looking to one-up the mooncake experience, try pairing it with Fyre Singapore’s Granat Pomegranate Wine (S$78.80) that complements and completes your all-rounded saccharine affair. Unlike typical reds like the or , you can expect much sweeter, deeper, and almost-sour notes from the pomegranate wine that’s not only refreshing but also palate-cleansing especially after a meal.

Flaky skin taro yam lotus

Finally, there’s also the option of bringing it way back to the classics with their Teochew Flaky Mooncakes that are encapsulated in a thousand-layered flaky skin, and comes in two flavours—the traditional Teochew Taro Yam Lotus (S$78.80), and of course, Fyre Singapore’s special Sakura Cherry Blossom Lychee Lotus (S$88.80), both healthily baked to a tee.

Enjoy early bird promotions from now until 31 August 2021 with 35% off all Ultimum sets that grant you a little taste of everything and 25% off all mooncakes.

5. Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium

Holiday Inn Atrium box

Established in the ‘90s, Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant at Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium has always been a dependable choice when it comes to Cantonese cuisine and no short of a scrumptious one at that. Baked mooncakes

Xin’s mooncake series returns this year served in a delicate baby pink dual-tiered box that doubles up as a jewellery case or multipurpose storage box to spruce up any living area. Flatlay of Aroma Truffle mooncake s

So you’ve heard of Aroma Truffle and their coveted truffle snacks and condiments, but now we can put them to the test with their new and improved version of their 24K gold-dusted mooncakes made from imported Italian black winter truffles and King durians.

A hand in frame shot of a mooncake

Since its introduction in 2019, Aroma Truffle’s mooncake selection has been unfailingly sold out each year, so here’s the sign you’ve been looking for to get your hands on them this year. Crafted locally with fresh ingredients, the yin and yang of their mooncakes come in two toothsome flavours, Onyx Truffle King Mooncake & Frosty Truffle King Mooncake (S$68 for a box of four, two of each flavour). The former is probably what most would recognise—a gold sheen dusted over jet black dewy skin that truly embodies the mark of opulence, and this truffle-packed charcoal snow skin gives way to bittersweet durian within.

Xem thêm :  Giáo án Ngữ văn 9 – Tiết 121: Sang thu (Hữu Thỉnh) – Phạm Thị Nga – THCS Ninh Xuân

The other offering, the , however, is a visually lighter take on the snowskin mooncake but contrarily heavier on the palate with the union of stronger truffle notes and creamy Pahang King durian flesh. Opening up the box of mooncakes, there’s an unmistakable fragrance of truffle that rises to greet you, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have my doubts about how the two flavours would gel together. Although one bite is all one needs to quell any non-believers—it’s inconceivable how well the savoury truffle notes blend with bittersweet King, but I guess they don’t call them the truffle authority for nothing. I don’t know how, but for some reason, Aroma Truffle’s managed to nail the balance to a tee.

A shot of truffle chips

If you’re also hoping to get a sneak of their truffle snacks while you’re at it, I don’t blame you. In fact, knock yourself out—make your delivery fee or a trip down worth the while by grabbing the Box of 4 Mooncakes and 5 Truffle Chips (S$98 now, U.P. S$158) and really making a feast out of it. Though this discounted price lasts only until 21 August 2021, so be snappy if you want to snag these bundles at the slashed prices.

Order your slice of indulgence here and have them delivered straight to you, or pick them up at any one of their three outlets.

10. Hong Kong MX Mooncakes

White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with Double Yolks

No stranger to the mooncake scene, Hong Kong MX Mooncakes is probably considered to be one of the godfathers of the traditional treat, having stayed true to their high-quality, authentic festive flavours year after year. Interestingly, the mooncakes are crafted locally in Hong Kong, so you can be sure that the standard you’ll be getting is as consistent as consistent gets.

Where achievements are concerned, to say that you’ll be getting award-winning mooncakes is an understatement. Since 2005, HKMX Mooncakes has consecutively been awarded the Belgian Monde Selection Quality Award, an honour that rivals Michelin. This year, in the Food Products Category, the brand’s signature White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with 2 Egg Yolks (S$68.00 for four) and Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with 2 Egg Yolks (S$63.50 for four) have been awarded the Gold and Grand Gold Medal respectively.

White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with 6 Yolks

If you’re really going for gold though, perhaps luxury in its truest form has to be the White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with 6 Egg Yolks (S$46.80 per piece) which in itself is a royal treat enough to send just about anyone head over heels. And here you thought that double egg yolks were already a mark of opulence—this 6-egg yolk mooncake really gives us a run for our money and more.

Minions Set

And just to inject a little fun into the celebrations, Hong Kong MX Mooncakes has a special Minions Bundle Set (S$95) that features the usual yellow-and-denim clad tin boxes that come in the form of Dave and Stuart, so the cuteness sticks around even long after the mooncakes are gobbled up.

Hong Kong MX Mooncakes offers free gifts for total cart purchases above S$100, and free delivery for purchases above S$200. Apart from their booths at Takashimaya and Vivocity Tangs, Hong Kong MX Mooncakes are also available at selected Fairprice and Cold Storage branches

Joy Luck Teahouse lifestyle shot

In a first-of-its-kind launch, Joy Luck Teahouse is rolling out their pilot mooncake series that’s available in both fruity and tea-based flavours. I’ve long been a fan of their classic Hong Kong Milk Tea (S$3.50) that makes one of my favourite beverages oh-so accessible, so here’s hoping that their mooncakes live up to the wake of its glory.

Cross section of mooncake

The Mini Mooncakes (S$48 for 8) come in pairs of four flavours—, , , and —each one equally fragrant and delicate in its own right. Those looking for a refreshing bite might be fans of the sweet lychee and blueberry notes infused with traditional lotus seed paste. The cassia flowers and ones, however, will present a more perfumed aroma that’s both unique and pleasant to the palate.

Joy Luck Teahouse is extending a 10% discount off purchases for all members, but this discount cannot be used in conjunction with other offers on the mooncakes.

The Marmalade Pantry lifestyle shot

I’ve always adored The Marmalade Pantry’s menu—seeing how I gobbled up their Christmas spread like a hyena on steroids last year should be testament enough. The cafe chain comes as my Saturday coffee spot with friends (that is, before all this COVID-19 mayhem came into play), so for now, I will have to relive the tea-time treats with their collection of mooncakes.

Assorted Marmalade Pantry mooncakes

The Marmalade Mix (S$72) is a medley of some of my favourite flavours reimagined into mooncakes—, , , and the classic . The curation balances a nice blend of modernity and tradition that will have you seeing some of your dependable favourites with a touch of contemporaneity.

Black Sesame cross section

And sure, the mooncakes might be a palate-pleaser, but what really steals the spotlight for me is the fashionably sophisticated limited edition bag that the little desserts come in. Because mooncake boxes are, timeless mooncake bags that pair fabulously with e-girl outfits are where it’s at now. I’m frankly quite a bit more excited receiving the chic purse that features rattan webbing, encased by scarlet red PVC leather—a statement piece that’ll elevate your look anytime.

One°15 Marina Flatlay

Did I intentionally place One°15 Marina on the 15th spot of this listicle for the satisfying number lineup? Yes, yes I did, and I can’t be stopped. My last memory of One°15 Marina wasn’t too long ago—and my Editor, Wani, might remember me taking four straight days of leave earlier this year for a staycation with some friends which happened right in this hotel.

Group shot of mixed mooncakes

While I doubt I’ll be getting a staycation there again anytime soon, I think I can at least relive the chill life (somewhat) vicariously through the spirit of their mooncakes. Chilli Padi Goodies group shot

To switch things up, perhaps this mooncake from Chilli Padi Goodies will be worth keeping an eye out for, especially if you’re seeking something other than the traditional baked or chilled snowskin mooncakes that almost everyone else seems to be offering.

Lychee Kisses

The Marble Snowskin Mooncakes (S$86.80 for four assorted pieces, S$58.80 for two pieces of your choice) marries two Singaporean traditional favourites—the , as well as mooncake—and altogether elevated with a ganache centre, speckled with bits of fruit or . The special mooncakes are available in four dreamy flavours—, , , .

Mitzo lfestyle shot

If there were a restaurant officially credited for making Canto dining cool again, it would probably be Mitzo. The modern restaurant-cum-bar combines a contemporary take on Cantonese cuisine with an artisanal cocktail programme—making the experience there casual yet intimate.

Mitzo baked mooncakes

The Baked Yam Mooncake (S$74 with yolk, S$72 without yolk) comes high on the recommendation list with sweet, creamy, and earthy yam paste contrasting splendidly against spiral flaky layers of buttery crusts. Have it with or without the salted egg yolk, just the way you like it.

To fall back on, there’s always the Baked White Lotus Seed Paste (S$72 for single yolk, S$74 for double yolk) or the healthier Baked Lychee White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake (S$72) which is consciously made with reduced sugar.

Celebration of Lights Gift Set

Perhaps they’re your go-to when it comes to crepe cakes, or maybe you’re giving their new champagne bar a go. But Lady M delivers yet again with a custom-designed ferris wheel box this year that’s equal parts decadent and whimsical.

Celebration of Lights flatlay

The Celebration of Lights Gift Set (S$95) is fashioned in the form of a dreamy ferris wheel and full moon amidst fireworks, reminiscent of a mid-autumn night sky spectacle. Between six pieces, the mooncakes are available in two rich, creamy flavours—Custard and Chocolate—designed in collaboration with Kee Wah Bakery, a renowned Hong Kong-founded establishment.

Yam mooncake from Whisking Bakes

We recently paid a visit to Chanel Li, an ex-flight attendant with Scoot who has since seen raving business with her brainchild, Whisking Bakes, having thought up the world’s first tart ball. She once again flexes her tenacity and versatility by proving that not only can she continue to bang out her old favourites, she’s also constantly thinking up new menu items such as mooncakes, too.

Cross section of yam mooncake

In keeping with her signature tarts, Chanel whips up mean Mini Yam Snowskin Mooncakes (S$30 for 4 pcs) too, putting a local spin on the taro classic. The mooncakes feature a chewy, mochi-like snowskin outer encasing yam filling that’s been intentionally made with less sugar, as well as generous amounts of lotus seeds for that added crunch.

Orders may be placed here from 5pm, 29 August 2021 and all mooncakes will be for collection or delivery on 19 September 2021
