Koh Rong Samloem, the 9 kilometer long island situated just off the coast of Cambodia is a hidden gem, but for how long? Every day, more and more visitors are drawn to the beauty of this remote island. A gem with no hords of tourists, roads, atm’s, warm water or Electricity. There is a relaxed vibe on the island caused by the hammocks hanging in between palm trees and the bounty beaches. The tropical turqoise water and some beach bungalows are the only thing to expect when visiting Koh Rong Samloem.

When you think of Cambodia, a beach holiday doesn’t pop your mind. No, Ankor What and the Killing Fields are the traditional highlights of the country. But Cambodia has some great beaches as well. The tropical setting, the fair prices and the lack of mass tourism is what makes it better than the beaches of Thailand in our opinion. Koh Rong is a little piece of paradise!

How to get there?

Koh Rong Samloem is only accessible by boat. From the pier in Sihanoukville, there are boats departing on a daily base to Koh Rong Samloem. Tickets cost about 10 dollar each way and it takes about an hour to reach your destination. Basically there are two options to reach the island.

The first one being a day trip and use a cruise boat such as Party Boa tor Sun Tours. It takes about three hours to reach Koh Rong Samloem since they are taking a stop to swim or snorkel. This is the longest option but the drinks and food (rice, chicken, fresg vegetables) onboard are great. The lounge seats and the deck makes it a comfortable ride. A ticket costs 25$, which is 5$ more than the regular boats, but it’s cheap for what you get. It also is the most popular option.

If you are not interested in the boat trip itself, and want to reach the island as soon as possible, the second option is better. The fast catamaran Speed Ferry Cambodia takes about 45 minutes to an hour to reach Koh Rong Samloem.

Where To Eat

Since all food needs to come in by boat, it can be quite pricy to eat. There is a small convenience store on the island that might give you an alternative, but it is very limited. Travelers on a budget can eat in Sweet Dreams, where they have a set menu available for a few dollars. If your budget is a little bit higher, we can recommend the the Orchid Resort Restaurant, with delicious fish sandwiches and cold beers. The most fancy place however is Sun Island Eco Village Restaurant.

What is the best time for visiting Koh Rong Samloem?

The climate of Koh Rong Samloem is quite predictable since it is dependent on the direction of prevailing winds and its location in the Gulf of Thailand. The winter season that starts from December to March is considered as the best time to visit Koh Rong Samloem. Beautiful dry days with little clouds and almost no rain is no exception in this period.

The summer months, June to September on the other hand, can bring strong winds and more rain. In April and May, temperature raises up to 30-40 degrees Celsius, but rain becomes more frequent. Koh Rong Samloem has high temperatures year-round but winter months seem more doable.

The tropical waters of Koh Rong Samloem are warm year round, so swimming, snorkeling or diving can be done in all seasons. Temperature of the water rarely falls below 28 degrees Celsius. However, the more shallow waters can tend to have higher temperatures. January has the coolest sea temperatures, but from then on it keeps rising until May.

What to see in Koh Rong Samloem?

The largest part of the island is covered with dense jungle. So for a big part, the island of Koh Rong Samloem is still pristine and undiscovered. In the surroundings of Koh Rong Samloem, there are a few smaller islands that can be visited by boat. The island is well-known for its beaches. There are three big beaches and a few smaller, more secluded ones at the north end of the island.

The traditional fishing village of Mpay Bay, situated on a hill top in the middle of the island is one of the few places where accommodation is available. The popular Saracen Bay is another hot spot for tourists visiting the island, with its heart-shaped bay.

Traveling around the island is possible by longtail boat. Bear in mind however that this can be pricey and time-consuming. Also, the sunset side of the island is known for having high waves which can make the boat ride quite ‘adventurous’.

Here are a few of the best beaches:

Saracen Bay is the place that only has started developing the last few years, but has gained a reputation of having some of the best accommodation nonetheless. With white sand beaches, turquoise water and gorgeous beachside sunrises when you wake up, it is known for its beauty and serenity.

Sunset Beach has a promising name, and we’re glad to say that it lives up to its expectations. The gorgeous pink and purple sunsets that visitors are treated with every night have made this long stretch of yellow sand beach a must-go destination. Since there aren’t too many guesthouses in this area yet, you can still have a quite secluded feel. There is a handful of options to eat and drink, while all owners have made an effort to provide activities such as paddleboarding, playing pool, volleybal tournaments and a beachside bbq.

Lazy Beach is the private beach for one the resort holding the same name. The yellow sands and the tropical pines makei t a great getaway. The beach may only be 700 meters long, this is more than enough since you will only bes haring it with other guests of the resort.

Before your go

The first thing you need to know before visiting Koh Rong Samloem that while the island is not that big, it might be quite hard to travel from one part to another, since there are no roads. Saracen Bay and Mpay Bay may be easy accessible by boat, but if you’re destination is elsewhere, be sure to plan in advance.

Accommodations on Koh Rong Samloem is limited so it is advised to book well in advance. There are no ATM’s on the island, so bring enough cash to cover your travel expenses.

Internet as well as shops are limited to none so be sure to prepare fort hat. Insect repellent, sunblock, condoms, shampoo and first aid / medicine are things you should bring from the mainland. However, some guesthouses will be able to sell you mosquito repellent and a few other basics.

Theft is not common on the island in contradiction to the nearby Koh Rong, but it does occasionally happen. So keep an eye on your valuables.

What to do in Koh Rong Samloem?

Some visitors claim there isn’t much to do on Koh Rong Samloem, except for the daily routine of having breakfast, have a swim, eat, relax with a good book and eat again. In a way this is true, since visiting Koh Rong Samloem is like visiting paradise, but if you want to, these are the best activities on the island.

Snorkeling

With shallow waters alongside the coastline, snorkeling is a great way to spend the day. Pretty much every bungalow owner has equipment available for hire or if you’re inexperienced, there are several operators on the island advertised in the restaurants on the beach.

Snuba

Maybe you guessed it, but snuba is a mix between snorkeling and scuba diving where water sport enthusiastics are getting air from the surface via a hose. This is the perfect option if you’re a great swimmer, but don’t have the scuba certification.

Scubadiving

Koh Rong Samloem is a divers paradise with several spots to go diving. If you don’t have your PADI certification yet, you can follow a course on the island. Other options to explore the underwaterworld are snorkeling and snuba.

Kayaking

Since it is quite a hassle to get yourself from one place to another on the island, kayaking might be a great way of exploring the surroundings. At the Beach Island Resort, you can rent kayaks for 10$ the first hour and 5 dollar for every additional hour. Paddle on the shallow waters in the bay and explore the mangrove trees, rocky island, the fishing village, the cave waterfall or have a rest at a deserted beach. If your paddling abilities are not that great, there is the option of organised tours as well.

Mountainbiking

Exploring Koh Rong Samloem with a mountainbike is possible with the organised tours offered by the Beach Island Resort on Saracen Bay. Basically there are three different tours: to Lazy Beach Beach (2 hours – 15$), to the Cave waterfall (2 hours – 15$) and to the Lighthouse and Jungle (5 hours – 25 $).

Jungle trekking

There are a few trails connecting one side of the island with the other. Starting from Saracen Bay, there is a trail towards the old lighthouse in the southwestern corner of Koh Rong Samloem. These trekking takes about four hours to complete and offers some stunning views on the jungle of the island. If you want an easier hike, there also are paths towards Lazy Beach, Robinson Bungalows and the Huba-Huba bungalows. A more challenging option is the hike to Sunset Beach, with rocky and steep parts. The Beach Island Resort also offers an 2 hour guided trekking for the price of 5 dollar. A jungle trekking is one of the best ways to spot wildlife in the jungle such as the long-tailed macaques, many species of birds and lizards and Asian palm civets.

Conclusion

Cambodia has two islands with the same name, Koh Rong, ( more info here kohrongislandcambodia.com ) but which island is best to visit? There is the big and well-visited Koh Rong, a tourist hot spot in Southeast Asia. And then there is Koh Rong Samloem, the smaller and more quiet destination. In our opinion Koh Rong Samloem is the best to visit if you’re looking to avoid the huge crowds and hope to have a real encounter with Cambodian culture. It is ranked amongst our favorites.
